Not everyone who knocks or calls is out to rip you off. Plenty of insulation and ventilation firms are honest, and a doorstep lead is a normal way to find work. But a damp loft is an easy thing to make frightening, and fear plus urgency is exactly the combination a pushy salesperson relies on. This is the most common and the most costly to fall for. Insulation is rarely the direct cause of loft condensation. Urgency is the biggest red flag of all. A patch of loft mould is worth dealing with, but it is almost never a same-day emergency, and no honest trader needs a decision on the spot. Genuine problems are still there tomorrow, which is exactly why you have time to get more than one quote. Be cautious of any single expensive product sold as the one fix for a damp loft. Condensation is a moisture and airflow problem, so the cure is ventilation, not a coating sprayed onto the symptom. Spray foam in particular can create separate issues at survey and mortgage time, so it is not something to agree to under doorstep pressure.
