It is one of the most common questions homeowners ask us: how thick should loft insulation actually be, and how much do you need? It matters, because too little and you are still losing heat, but piling it ever higher brings diminishing returns. Here is the plain English answer, plus how the main materials compare and how to check what your loft has now.
For a typical loft insulated with mineral wool, the current UK recommendation is around 270mm, about 11 inches. That is the depth at which the material does most of its work, and going much beyond it adds cost and bulk for only a small extra gain. Many older homes were originally fitted with far less, as 100mm or even 50mm was once standard, which is why so many lofts benefit from a top up.
Enough to reach that recommended performance level across the whole loft floor. Depth is really a stand in for a more important measure: thermal performance, often expressed as a U-value or R-value. Different materials reach the same performance at different thicknesses, so 270mm is the right target for mineral wool, but you would need less of a higher performance material to match it. The goal is the performance, not the centimetres.
Warm air rises, and without insulation a large share of your home's heat escapes straight through the roof. Loft insulation traps pockets of still air within the material, slowing that heat loss so your home holds its warmth for longer and your heating does not have to work as hard. That is why the loft is usually the single most cost effective place to start.

Pop your head into the loft and measure from the ceiling below up to the top of the existing insulation with a ruler or tape. If it sits well below 270mm, or the material looks thin, patchy or compressed, that is a clear sign for a top up. Snow that melts quickly off your roof while neighbours' stays put is another tell tale that heat is escaping through the top of your home.
If your loft has thin or compressed insulation, topping it up to the recommended depth is usually one of the simplest improvements you can make. A second layer is normally laid at right angles over the first to cover the joists and avoid gaps. If the existing material is damp, mouldy or contaminated, it is better to remove and replace it rather than cover it over.
Thicker insulation changes how your loft breathes. Without adequate ventilation at the eaves, moist air can condense and lead to damp. A good installer will make sure airflow paths are maintained so you get the warmth without the condensation, which is another reason the quality of the fit matters as much as the material.
