Plenty of older homes have a thin, sagging layer of insulation under the floorboards, and the tempting move is to prod it back up and add a bit more. Sometimes that helps. Often it is a short-lived patch on a floor that needs doing properly, and the money returns very little. Here is what tired underfloor wool actually does, what a top-up really saves, and when insulating the floor once is the better buy.

Floor insulation is the quiet one. It saves less than a loft or wall upgrade, so it gets ignored, and yet a cold, draughty ground floor is one of the most uncomfortable things to live with. When people ring us about it, there is usually some old insulation already slung under the floorboards, drooping and past its best, and the question is whether to just prop it up and add more. The honest answer is that a quick top-up is frequently a false economy, and here is why.
A suspended timber floor sits over a ventilated void, and that constant airflow is unkind to loose mineral wool. Over the years it sags away from the underside of the boards, so it stops being in full contact where it matters. It can pick up moisture from the damp void air. And it rarely seals the perimeter, so cold draughts still track up around the edges of the room, which is the very thing you can feel underfoot. Prodding that same wool back up and tucking a bit more alongside it does not change its nature: it will sag again, and the draughts it never sealed are still there.
Be clear-eyed about the payback, because floors are where it is thinnest. Only around 10 percent of a home's heat escapes through the floor, so the Energy Saving Trust suggests even a full job might save a detached home in the region of 85 pounds a year (2026). A partial top-up of tired wool returns a fraction of that. So paying a tradesman to re-stuff insulation that will droop again within a few years, without sealing the draughts you actually notice, is money that does not come back. On a floor, the case for spending is comfort and durability, not the meter, which is exactly why it is worth doing once and doing it right rather than patching.
Doing a suspended timber floor properly means insulation held in firm, continuous contact with the boards, the perimeter and penetrations sealed so the draughts actually stop, and the whole thing designed to keep the underfloor ventilation working. That is the version that makes a room feel warm underfoot for decades, rather than for a season or two. It costs more than a quick patch up front, but on a floor you insulate once, the durable job is the one that earns its keep. Costs, according to Checkatrade (2026), run around 95 to 115 pounds per square metre installed, roughly 105 pounds as a guide, or about 258 pounds per square metre if floorboards need replacing, with labour typically 240 to 350 pounds a day. We would not be advising you honestly if we said a top-up never makes sense. If your existing underfloor insulation is dry, well fitted and still in good contact with the boards, and the draughts are already under control, then simply re-securing a sagging section and filling a gap or two is a fair, low-cost tidy-up, and we will tell you if that is all your floor needs. The point is not that adding insulation is wrong, it is that re-stuffing worn-out wool as a reflex, on a floor that needs sealing and doing properly, rarely pays.
Whatever you do under a suspended floor, the ventilation is sacred. The void stays healthy because air flows through the airbricks in the outside walls, carrying moisture away and keeping the timbers dry. No insulation, new or topped up, can be allowed to block an airbrick or choke that cross-flow. Do that and you trade a cold floor for damp and rot, which is a far worse bargain. Any competent installer designs the work around keeping the airflow clear; if a quote does not mention it, ask.
